Launched in 1974, the Golf represented a complete break with Volkswagen tradition, yet it would prove as big a sales success as its Beetle predecessor. In GTi form the Golf has become one of the great icons of modern motoring, giving rise to an entirely new class of sporting saloon - the 'hot hatch' - in the process. First seen at the Frankfurt Show in September 1975, the GTi came with a 1.6 litre, fuel-injected, 110bhp engine which, in a car weighing a mere 846 kilos (1,861lbs) resulted in a performance package of a type not seen since the demise of the Mini Cooper 1275 S.

Increasing competition from rival manufacturers prompted the introduction of a 1.8 litre GTi in 1982, and although maximum power increased only slightly to 114bhp there was a considerable improvement in mid-range acceleration. First registered on 12th April 1983, this lovely example of the original hot hatch has led a pampered life over the past few years that belie its mileage. Having only had three former keepers and forming part of two large collections in recent years, it has had light use and always been dry stored indoors. The Lhasa Green paintwork presents well, and the interior is in remarkably good condition for a car of this age and mileage.

Retaining its original 13” nine slot alloy wheels, the car looks as it should. The supplied history file shows a history of good maintenance with 19 stamps shown in its original Volkswagen service book and a further three with well reputed Wagon Wheels as well as many other receipts and MoT test certificates. Now only for sale to make room for a new acquisition, the vendor reports the car to run and drive very well with its 1800cc engine revving away as freely as you would hope. Supplied with a V5C registration document, book pack, service book, MoT test certificates and other receipts.

This entry level classic is ready to provide maximum bang for your buck thrills as well as holding its own at any classic car event.
