Launched in 1974, the Golf represented a complete break with Volkswagen tradition yet it would prove as big a sales success as its Beetle predecessor. In GTi form the Golf has become one of the great icons of modern motoring, giving rise to an entirely new class of sporting saloon - the 'hot hatch' - in the process. First seen at the Frankfurt Show in September 1975, the GTi came with a 1.6-litre, fuel-injected, 110bhp engine which, in a car weighing a mere 1,861lbs made for a performance package of a type not seen since the demise of the Mini Cooper 1275S.

Presented in gleaming white coachwork with contrasting original cloth interior this completely restored Mk. I GTi is as good an example as you would have found when this iconic sports car rolled off the production line in 1982. The current owner of this vehicle has left no stone unturned in maintain the originality including running an internet blog throughout its work offering opinions and help from fellow VW enthusiasts.

The engine was transplanted from another GTi and compression ratings on the engine has been checked along with a rolling road test to ensure that mechanically it is of the standard offered by the rest of the restoration, every auxiliary item accompanying the engine has been either re-furbished or replaced with the only modern upgrade offered being the braided fuel lines to help the performance and reliability.

This is without doubt a fantastic opportunity to reminisce in that 80’s sports car era with an example that will knock spots off many others on the market, offered at such an attractive estimate with an MoT test certificate valid until August 2015 we will all be struggling to keep our hands in our pockets come August the 30th!
