Like so many great ideas, the Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter, or Bus, began with a sketch in a notebook. Engineers inspired by a drawing from Dutch importer Ben Pon adapted the Type 1 car platform, and the Volkswagen Bus made its debut in 1950. The first-generation Volkswagen Buses were built from 1950-67 in a variety of configurations from panel delivery trucks and pickups to factory-outfitted campers. This 1967 Volkswagen Camper Bus was among the last of the first-generation split-window Type 2 built, and it underwent a restoration that returned everything that made the Transporter appeal to millions of adventure seekers in the late ‘60s back to original California black-plate condition.
The Camper Van was refinished into 1967 period configuration in two-tone white-over-red paint and topped with a lightweight aluminum roof rack for additional cargo capacity. The “Splittie” gets its name from the flip-out split front windshield, which is joined on the camper by crank-out louvered Jalousie side windows with screens to keep out unwanted pests. Opening the pivot barn doors reveals Volkswagen camping equipment with wood-finished storage cabinets, countertop ice box, fold-down center table and beige bench seat that folds flat into a bed. Tartan side curtains help transform the van from living room to bedroom configurations.
Front seats feature new gray fabric and vinyl upholstery with matching door and kick panels, a perfect complement to white dashboard and black rubber carpet. The famously upright steering wheel over original VDO gauges is ready to deliver the forward-control Volkswagen-bus motoring experience. The 1,200cc air-cooled flat 4-cylinder engine is equipped with dual Weber carburetors for improved performance to the rear wheels through the 4-speed manual transmission. The last year of the first-generation Volkswagen Bus was also the first for the factory 12-volt electrical system.
Color-matched white steel wheels dressed with chrome Volkswagen-logo hubcaps and whitewall radial tires are ready to roll into ongoing adventure.
