The TR2 was the first true post-war Triumph sports car. It was superseded in 1955 by the TR3 and finally the TR4, which signalled the end of an era and the beginning of another. A completely new body featured wind-up windows, and while the purists howled, everyone else rejoiced. Another modern convenience was, for the first time, a proper boot. Chassis and drivetrain were little changed, with the most important updates being a synchromesh first gear and rack-and-pinion steering. The cumulative effect of the changes was quite dramatic. The TR4 was a car that could be used every day.

According to the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, this particular Triumph TR4 was dispatched from the factory on 16 May, 1962, destined for the United States and ordered new through the Standard Triumph Motor Company Inc. of New Orleans. Delivered to North American “Deluxe” specification, it was fitted new with a heater, windscreen washer, overdrive, a white tonneau cover and whitewall tyres. It was finished new in Signal Red with black upholstery and in the intervening years has returned to Europe.

In the current owner’s care the car was treated to a no-expense-spared restoration and entrusted in 2005 to the British Sports Car Centre in Edewecht. The body was completely stripped to bare metal, the gearbox was rebuilt with all new gears, and the engine received new piston gaskets as well as being adapted to use unleaded fuel. All of the additional mechanical work is enumerated in the car’s file, which lists a fixed price of 21,000 Euros. Rarely are TR4s restored with such attention to detail. They are tremendously fun to drive and certainly among the most easily accessible entries into English sports cars. This car comes with an owners handbook, history folder and FIVA pass.
