For 2014, Toyota stopped selling the FJ Cruiser in the U.S., marking the end of the era with the Trail Teams Ultimate Edition. Just 2,500 were built, each with unique features like Heritage Blue paint and a white grille surround, both of which nod to the colorings of original FJ-40s, specialized TRD/Trail Teams front and rear off-road suspension by Bilstein, an aluminum TRD skid plate that measures a full .25 inches thick and an ocean of interior upgrades including a special plaque indicating it’s one of 2,500 status. This 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser Trail Teams Ultimate Edition shows just 372 miles on the odometer.
Fitted with a 4.0L/260 HP V-6 engine, a 5-speed automatic transmission and 4-wheel drive with a dual-range transfer case, the limited-edition FJ is equipped with 4-wheel disc brakes, Bilstein shocks, rock rails, a roof rack, active traction control, a rear-mounted spare tire carrier and an AM/FM/CD stereo system with Bluetooth among other amenities. The unique black and gray interior features water-resistant upholstery, and the FJ Cruiser rolls on 16-inch TRD alloy beadlock-style wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A tires. One of the most popular off-road and all-terrain vehicles ever made, the Toyota Land Cruiser has long been a staple vehicle for Toyota.
The Land Cruiser is Toyota’s longest, continually produced model with more than 10 million sold worldwide since 1951. Production of the original FJ-40 ceased in 1984, with Toyota looking to enlarge the Land Cruiser and make it more luxurious. However, enthusiasts were dismayed at the end of the FJ-40, as were many Toyota employees. About 10 years later, product planning and sales got together to talk about a return of the FJ-40. Working in secret with Akio Toyoda himself, a special shop was set up at Toyota’s northern California plant to begin conceptualizing a modern FJ-40.
With enthusiasm from the board of directors in Japan, the project moved forward and was unveiled at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show, where it wowed both the press and public alike, further encouraging Toyota to press on. The production version was introduced at the 2005 Chicago Auto Show and manufacturing began in January 2006.
