Toyota rolled out its all-new, third-generation 4Runner in 1995 as a 1996 model. This unmodified time capsule endures in highly original condition over three decades later. At the time of writing, the odometer shows just 6,954 miles logged since the now legendary 4×4 was first sold at Continental Toyota in Countryside, Illinois. The “J” to start the VIN signifies Japanese manufacture, but the 4Runner story originated in the U.S. Facing the impending end of sales of the mighty FJ40 Land Cruiser in 1979, Wisconsin Toyota dealer Jack Safro had an idea to satisfy his customers looking for an enclosed 4×4 wagon.
Safro and Toyota teamed up with Winnebago, who added a back seat, carpeting and a purpose-built removable top with a headliner to a Hilux 4×4 pickup at their Iowa facility and created the Trekker in 1981. The first 4Runner followed in 1984, and this descendant is a culmination of over a decade of refinements to the original formula. The Desert Dune Metallic sport utility icon is powered by a 3.4L 5VZ-FE V-6 engine, factory rated at 183 HP and 217 lb-ft of torque through the electronically controlled 4-speed transmission and dual-range 4WD transfer case. The N180 features coil-sprung independent front and live-axle rear suspension for compliant yet rugged all-terrain travel.
Oak Sport Cloth upholstered seating, a power sunroof and rear window and a factory AM/FM/CD/cassette stereo offer an SR5 trim level of sophisticated and practical comfort in the cabin. Genuine Toyota equipment and accessories include a roof rack, chrome-trimmed fender flares and running boards, and a towing receiver hitch. The remarkably well-preserved 4Runner rolls on alloy wheels and Dunlop Grandtrek tires.
