Needing a major update from previous generations, Rolls-Royce introduced the SZ platform in 1980 to serve as the new base for all its cars. An angular, more contemporary style was utilized, equipped with elements like square headlights (as opposed to the traditional round ones) and smoother, less “swoopy” lines, giving the car a stately look for the time. However, the iconic vertical grille was left alone, featured front and center and adorned by the statuesque Spirit of Ecstasy emblem. The platform was utilized for several models across the Rolls-Royce and Bentley platforms, including the Silver Spirit/Spur, Silver Dawn, Park Ward limousine, Mulsanne, Turbo R and many others.

The Silver Spirit featured a 6.75-liter V8 with Bosch fuel injection good for a smooth 220 horsepower. The cars achieved the smoothest possible ride thanks to a self-leveling hydraulic suspension from Citroen and were equipped with comforts like 4-wheel power disc brakes, air conditioning, power windows and seats, all standard.

Having covered just over 23,000 miles from new, this 1989 Silver Spirit is a stunning example of a classic Rolls-Royce. Purchased new in Beverly Hills, CA, the car first was owned by the Hearst family, founders of the famed mass-media conglomerate by the same name. Retained by the family until a few years ago, the car has been incredibly well-kept and cared for its entire life. The interior features the original white Corinthian leather seats with burgundy piping, complemented by a burgundy carpet with the original wool floor mats. A combination of wood trim work is used throughout the interior and shines like new.

The car runs and drives beautifully like a classic Rolls should, and everything from the air conditioning to the power seats and windows works. A modern stereo has been hidden in the dash compartment with Bluetooth capabilities for entertainment.
