In the late 1940s, Rolls-Royce had acknowledged, grudgingly perhaps, that “in the less formal mood of today, however, many who still require all that Rolls-Royce traditionally bestows prefer to drive themselves.” That step-change came to partial fruition with the 1955 Silver Cloud of 1955 and ultimate fulfilment in 1962 with the launch of the Silver Cloud III, a true, dual-purpose luxury touring car that was to be savored equally by those enjoying whisper-quiet chauffeur-driven serenity or the glorious commanding vista from behind the steering wheel.
The first iteration of the Silver Cloud featured a new, longer, lower chassis frame that allowed in-house designers to fashion a far roomier, more elegant and sleeker factory standard body with a lower stance and less formal, gently tapering profile. Indeed, so successful was the restrained and informal elegance of the Standard Steel factory body that only a very small proportion of owners commissioned custom bodies. One thing it lacked, however, was a modern power unit, and with the Silver Cloud II of 1959, Rolls-Royce replaced the aged 4566cc straight six with a far more potent aluminum overhead-valve V-8 of 6230cc.
For its final flourishing in 1962, the frontal treatment of the Silver Cloud III was updated with quad headlamps and lower hood line, while the V-8 was further refined and endowed with more power (Rolls-Royce hinted at 7%). Allied with a reduction in overall weight, the Silver Cloud III was proven at 114 MPH. Other enhancements included individual front seats and lighter power steering.
As British magazine Autosport noted, the V-8 Cloud “gives high-speed travel in silence and luxury, while the driver and passengers enjoy the sense of wellbeing that only the best British craftsmanship can give.” In addition to the standard high-level appointments such as walnut trim, wool carpets and rear picnic tables, this 1965 Cloud III sedan in Mason’s Black with tan leather interior was previsouly owned by actor Jack Lemmon and also benefits from the desirable factory options of power windows and air conditioning.
Comprehensively restored and with a relatively modest mileage of 39,500, this final-year Cloud III from a production run of just 2,376 is also far more exclusive than the succeeding generation of Rolls-Royces produced in 10 times the volume.
