At one time, people assumed those who drove their own Rolls-Royce Phantom had either fallen on hard times or sacked the chauffeur for some unforgiveable indiscretion of a rather indelicate nature. Not so with the smaller but much more lithe Ghost, which Rolls-Royce pitched as the most driver-orientated car it had ever made when it debuted in 2009. True, smaller is a relative term when describing a 212.6-inch long car that still offers sumptuous limousine accommodation very nearly as spacious as the Phantom’s, but this is a car that spans both realms.
Powered by a 562 HP, twin-turbo, direct-injection 6.6L V-12 courtesy of Rolls-Royce’s parent company BMW, the Ghost also offered sports car performance, hitting 60 MPH in 4.7 seconds on the way to a limited 155 MPH. To dig into the detail of the natural grain leather of the heated and cooled seats or the technological flourishes such as the head-up display, nav system or infotainment screens above each of the rear picnic tables would require some serious space. It’s better simply to say, as straight-talking car connoisseur Jeremy Clarkson wrote, “It really is noticeably better inside than anything from Mercedes, Audi or Jaguar.
It is therefore worth the extra outlay.” The truly bespoke nature and quality of the Ghost is further emphasised by the script on each of the door tread-plates, which reads, “Hand Built in Goodwood, England.” At launch in 2009, the base price was $247,000, though in reality, most examples sold in the U.S. were optioned to $300,000 or more, approaching three-quarters the cost of the Phantom. On the other hand, the Ghost was nearly twice the money of parent company BMW’s flagship 7-Series. It had to justify that, and it did. A standard Ghost fitment on this white-liveried 2013 example is the highly flexible and responsive 8-speed automatic transmission.
A notable optional feature is the panoramic sunroof, and with its odometer reading of 35,000 miles, it has driven not much more than twice the distance covered in the original Silver Ghost’s legendary 15,000-mile endurance run of 1906, which included 27 trips between London and Glasgow.
