A factory-bodied Silver Dawn, built for export to Africa with special equipment and retained within a private collection.
Introduced in 1949 as Rolls-Royce’s first Standard Steel saloon, the Silver Dawn was produced until 1955 and occupies an important position in the marque’s post-war history, offering owners a factory-bodied alternative to bespoke coachwork. Supplied new via African Transport Co. for customer Mr A.L. Christie, with delivery promised on 14/01/1952, it was imported back to the UK in 1983 forming part of a private collection since 2012. Originally finished in Midnight Blue with a single Ivory coach line complemented by Beige hide upholstery with matching piping, a fawn headcloth and brown carpets, as detailed on the original works instruction sheet.
The vehicle has had a restoration at some point in its life, believed to be around the mid to late 1980s, now finished in Sable over Sand with Bordeaux leather. Powered by the 4,257cc inline six-cylinder engine paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox, the car features independent front suspension and servo-assisted drum brakes in keeping with the model’s refined touring character. Built specifically for use in Africa, it was specified with Colonial front springing, double filament headlamps, oil bath air cleaner, a built-in rear number plate with plates, medium and short-wave radio with separate speaker and an additional set of carburettor jets for use at altitude.
Supplied with its build sheet detailing chassis SHD 20 and body number 5105, and a file of invoices and previous MOTs. This early Silver Dawn presents an opportunity to acquire a well-specified export example of Rolls-Royce’s first factory-built Standard Steel saloon.
