As Rolls-Royce forged ahead into the second decade of this millennium, it produced a lineup that rivaled and even eclipsed the variety of delightful bespoke models of the 1960s. In 2010, the imposing Phantom was joined by the more reasonably proportioned and much more driver-oriented Ghost sedan; the very much sleeker and less formal two-door Wraith coupe was a transformation of the Ghost rather than a conversion, and likewise, the convertible two-door Dawn which joined the stable in 2016. Each model, though benefiting from a common platform, was distinct and individual, and in the case of the Dawn, with 80% of the body panels unique to it, it was again something completely different.
For a Rolls-Royce, it was exuberant to the point of hedonism. The Dawn will whisk four occupants to 62 MPH in 4.9 seconds on the way to a limited 155 MPH, thanks to a 6.6L/563 HP twin-turbo V-12 driving through an 8-speed automatic transmission. With the six-layer fabric roof in place, Rolls-Royce claims with some justification that the Dawn is “the quietest open-top car ever made.” Indeed, thanks to the near-to-invisible noise-reducing French seems, road testers were hard pressed to detect any discernible difference between the Dawn and the Wraith fixed-head coupe. That’s impressive, but the real point is revealed by the silent ballet as the top disappears in 22 seconds.
You can, if you wish, do this at up 31 MPH. But it’s as a convertible that the Dawn is most impressive. The underbody has been substantially re-engineered and strengthened with the result that Rolls-Royce asserts the Dawn to be “the most rigid four-seater convertible available.” The Dawn, as Rolls-Royce puts it, is simply “an emblem of spontaneity.” It’s also pretty much prepared for anything, right down to the twin umbrellas, which are just one of so many bespoke flourishes on this 19,705-mile example.
