A legend that was an inseparable part of the French automotive scene from the 1960s to the 1990s, Renault’s first front-wheel drive car, the Renault 4, introduced a rear tailgate, long-travel suspension and an excellent load capacity. In 2021, to celebrate the model’s 60th anniversary, the manufacturer had five cars converted to electric power. It chose versions symbolising the model, which were completely restored by the staff at the Collection before being sent to EV Europe, a Dutch specialist which carried out the conversion, replacing the petrol engine by an electric motor and installing the batteries.
The motor is directly connected to the gearbox, which is locked in third, with an electrical inverter providing reverse gear. A screen has been added on the left-hand side of the dashboard to display the information specific to the electric powertrain. The car produces about 30bhp and has a range of approximately 100km. This particular Renault 4 is covered in a protective film in white, with a striped roof, beneath which it has kept its attractive apple green paintwork, which is visible inside the car. It has been fitted with an older radiator grille and high-quality black leather upholstery.
The odometer is reading less than 1000km, which doubtless corresponds to the distance it has covered since being converted. The car can only be registered in the Netherlands. Its new owner will have the choice of keeping the protective film or of removing it to reveal the green paintwork, but in either case they will be able to enjoy a Renault 4 in excellent condition with the smooth drive of an electric car.
