Dès le début des années 1970, Frank Williams s'est lancé dans la réalisation de ses propres monoplaces de compétition. En 1977, il s'associe avec le jeune ingénieur Patrick Head et fonde Williams Grand Prix Engineering. C'est le début d'une formidable aventure qui se poursuit aujourd'hui sous le nom de Williams F1 Team, malgré la disparition de Frank Williams en novembre 2021. Entre 1980 et 1997, l'écurie a été couronnée neuf fois au Championnat du Monde de Formule 1 pour le titre constructeur, et sept fois pour le titre pilotes, avec successivement Alan Jones, Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill et Jacques Villeneuve.
Si Williams conçoit et fabrique ses monoplaces, il fait appel à un constructeur extérieur pour ses moteurs. Ayant perdu Honda en 1987, il se tourne vers Renault dont le nouveau moteur V10 arrive en 1989. L'équipe retrouve tout son allant à partir de la mi-saison 1991 et, en 1992, décroche le titre mondial avec Nigel Mansell. En 1993, Williams-Renault change de pilotes et Alain Prost prend la place de Mansell, secondé par Damon Hill, fils du célèbre champion Graham Hill. En face, le talentueux Ayrton Senna reste chez McLaren, propulsée par un V8 Ford. La bataille Prost-Senna s'annonce serrée!
Côté technique, le nouveau règlement a imposé aux concepteurs des aménagements délicats, qui entretiennent l'incertitude sur l'issue du championnat. Chez Williams, la FW15 est conçue dans la lignée de la FW14 de la saison précédente, autour d'une solide cellule monocoque. Elle est équipée du moteur Renault RS5, radicalement différent du RS4 par ses culasses, ses chambres de combustion, sa distribution et son embiellage et ne cessera d'évoluer de GP en GP. Dès le premier Grand Prix, Prost s'impose devant Senna. La suite est plus tumultueuse et c'est à la mi-saison que le Français prend une avance définitive sur ses adversaires, décrochant son quatrième titre de champion du monde des pilotes.
Son co-équipier Damon Hill termine troisième alors qu'Ayrton Senna s'est intercalé à la deuxième place. Quant à l'écurie Williams-Renault, elle décroche son second titre de Champion du Monde des Constructeurs. La voiture que nous présentons est un modèle d'exposition, semblable à la machine ayant permis à Alain Prost de s'imposer en 1993. Réalisée par Renault à des fins promotionnelles, sa mécanique est incomplète et elle n'est pas fonctionnelle, mais elle représente une superbe évocation d'un des plus beaux résultats de l'écurie Williams et de Renault en Formule 1, à l'époque du duel historique entre les deux meilleurs pilotes du moments, Alain Prost et Ayrton Senna.

In 1977 he joined forces with the young engineer Patrick Head and founded Williams Grand Prix Engineering. This was the start of a formidable adventure that, despite the death of Frank Williams in November 1921, continues today under the name Williams F1.
Between 1980 and 1997, the team won the Formula 1 Constructors' World Championship nine times, and the Drivers' World Championship seven times, with, in order, Alan Jones, Keke Rosberg, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve. Although Williams designed and built his own cars, he turned to other manufacturers for his engines. Having lost Honda in 1987, he moved to Renault who's new V10 engine appeared in 1989. The team rediscovered its winning ways halfway through the 1991 season and in 1992 won the world title with Nigel Mansell.
In 1993, Williams-Renault changed drivers and Alain Prost took Mansell's place, backed up by Damon Hill, son of the celebrated champion Graham Hill. Meanwhile, the talented Senna remained at McLaren, powered by a V8 Ford engine. The Prost-Senna battle promised to be close! On the technical side, the new regulations required some tricky adjustments that maintained the uncertainty surrounding the outcome of the championship. At Williams, the FW15 was designed in line with the FW14 of the previous season, around a solid monocoque cell.
It was equipped with an RS5 Renault engine, with cylinder heads, combustion chambers, timing and conrods that were radically different from the RS4, and which continued to be developed from one race to the next. At the first Grand Prix, Prost moved ahead of Senna. A tighter battle followed and it was halfway through the season before the Frenchman took a definitive lead over his opponents, going on to win his fourth Drivers' World Championship title. His team-mate Damon Hill finished third, with Ayrton Senna in second place. The Williams-Renault team won its second Constructors World Championship title.
The car presented is a display model, similar to the machine that gave Alain Prost his win in 1993. Built by Renault for promotional purposes, it is incomplete mechanically and doesn't run, but is a superb evocation of one of the Williams team's and Renault's finest results in Formula 1, during the period of the historic duel between the two best drivers of the day, Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna.
