A turbo version of the 944 was always on the cards, it boosted the 2.5 litre engine by nearly 60bhp, whilst both the clutch and gearbox were uprated to suit. The chassis got thicker anti-roll bars and four pot brake callipers were fitted. A smooth nose panel and a larger rear spoiler distinguished it from its lesser models. For 1988 a Turbo SE was offered with 250bhp thanks to a larger turbocharger, the transmission was again upgraded and a limited slip diff was fitted along with uprated brakes and Koni dampers. From 1989-1991 the SE specification was adopted for a standard 944 Turbo making it somewhat of a sleeping giant.
This particular 944 Turbo has a superb specification including electric sports seats, cruise control, sports suspension and limited slip differential and Porsche Cup alloys. The silver paintwork has a deep lustre and panel gaps are reassuringly good throughout. You can sense the build quality in this car from the reassuring thunk of the doors to the high quality finish of the interior; this is clothed in cream leather that's as supple as the day it was fitted.
We are informed by the vendor that when you want to get serious about pushing on this car is certainly up for it. The result is a crisp, immediate urge accompanied by a strident exhaust note in every gear- there's no clutch slip and the gearshift is sharp and responsive.
Confidence in service history is essential with this type of car and we are informed that there is a substantial history file with this car, including a recent cambelt service and tensioners.
Track day attrition means few unmolested 944 Turbos survive, which is a shame, because it's the ultimate evolution of the front engine four cylinder Porsche and one of the most thrilling to drive. To find one is a rare opportunity and it is likely to hold its value if maintained in this condition.
