Type 991. 430 bhp, 3,800 cc DOHC horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine, seven-speed manual transmission, front suspension with MacPherson struts and anti-roll bar and multi-link LSA rear suspension with anti-roll bar, and four-wheel ventilated and cross-drilled disc brakes. Wheelbase: 96.5 in.
To help celebrate the Porsche Club of America’s Rennsport Reunion V at California’s Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the German automaker created a limited-production model of the already rare and potent Carrera GTS coupe. Dubbed the Rennsport Reunion Edition, these 25 identical 911 Carreras were snapped up by collectors as soon as they left the factory.
The Rennsport Reunion was conceived by the late Bob Carlsen, then head of Media Relations for Porsche Cars North America, and former Porsche factory driver and well-known vintage racer Brian Redman. They believed that gathering many of Porsche’s most famous and iconic racing cars and their former drivers at a race circuit where PCA members could examine them close up and see many of them driven might prove a successful venture. With the support of the Porsche factory and museum, the first Rennsport Reunion was staged at Lime Rock Park, Connecticut, over the weekend of 27–29 July 2001. The response from the Porsche enthusiast community was overwhelmingly positive.
Plans were immediately put into motion for encore performances. The second and third Rennsport Reunions were held at Daytona International Speedway in 2004 and 2007, and then relocated to Laguna Seca in 2011 and 2015. All five events have proven tremendously successful, drawing hundreds of entrants and thousands of paying spectators.
To help celebrate the most recent Reunion, Porsche created this special edition for the United States market. The rear-wheel-drive 991 GTS, which many enthusiasts saw as the last of Porsche’s normally aspirated sports cars, filled the gap between the standard Carrera S and the more aggressive GT3, and this commemorative variation is even more unique. Powered by a 430-horsepower version of Porsche’s race-derived 3.8-liter four-cam flat-six, the Rennsport Reunion GTS is capable of a near-200 mph top speed.
A seven-speed manual transaxle is part of the package, along with the Sport Chrono Plus package with sports exhaust and dynamic engine mounts, torque vectoring with a limited-slip differential, and Porsche’s ingenious PASM adaptive suspension system. Also included were Rear-park Assist and black 20-inch diameter Sport Classic alloy wheels, which are otherwise only available through Porsche Tequipment.
The Rennsport Reunion GTS coupes were all painted Fashion Gray – a color that harkens back to the earliest 356s – and trimmed with special black and red appliqués on the doors, hood, roof, and rear decklid. The harmonizing Alcantara and black leather interior includes 18-way adjustable sport seats and a Bose high-end stereo. The dashboard and door-sill covers are trimmed in carbon-fiber and carry Rennsport Reunion Edition identification. The Rennsport Reunion logo appears on the center console. The Sport design steering wheel, door panel trim, floor mats, and both seat headrests are all stitched in contrasting Carmine Red, a color that also appears on the seat belts and tachometer face.
This example was purchased new in January of 2016 and is offered in virtually as-delivered condition, having recorded a mere 1,200 miles. Opportunities to acquire such a rare, limited-production, high-performance Porsche do not come along very often; true enthusiasts of this hallowed marque should not allow this one to pass them by.
