Sequence No. 111 of 246 units built, this 1974 Porsche 911 Targa Carrera is presented in black with the iconic “Carrera” side script colored in red along the side, with the car further accented with red wheel centers and a black Targa roll bar hoop cover. This car has been treated to a recent engine rebuild in 2019, and it retains its original black leather interior. In model year 1974, Porsche made major design changes to the 911 that included an engine displacement increase from 2.4L to 2.7L, the installation of high-back bucket seats with an integrated headrest and the incorporation of “impact bumpers” on both the front and rear.
Porsche offered two basic models of 911 to the American market: the standard 911S and the Carrera. The Carrera distinguished itself from the standard 911S with a fiberglass “ducktail” rear spoiler, a staggered set of premium forged Fuchs alloy wheels measuring 7×15 inches in the rear and 6×15 inches up front, a distinctive flared rear fender arch enabling fitment of a wider rear wheel, a bold “Carrera” script along the side and another small “Carrera” script on the rear decklid. These changes were cosmetic, with the drivetrain and mechanical layout remaining the same to the standard 911 with both retaining the 175 HP horizontally opposed flat-6 engine.
However, the rear “ducktail” spoiler was more than cosmetic based on its ability to dramatically reduce rear end lift by 70% at high speed and serving to stabilize the cars aerodynamic balance. The Targa design was also a brilliant styling statement, as it was an innovative safety feature. The Targa roll bar provided excellent passenger protection in a rollover encounter and enabled unparalleled structural rigidity to the entire car.
