The Carrera name has long been reserved for Porsche’s top performers. A reference to Porsche’s 1953 victory in the fabled Carrera Panamericana races in Mexico, its first use on a production Porsche appeared on the 1955 4-cam 356 Carrera, then in 1972 on a new, wider-bodied 911 boasting an extra 20 HP. It reappeared in 1984 when the SC—another long-time designator of Porsche performance—was displaced by the third-generation Carrera. Improving on the “standard” 911, the 1984 Carrera incorporated a 4mm longer stroke, increasing displacement from 2995cc to 3164cc, the fifth increase in displacement in the 911’s then 20-year history from the original 1991cc.
Compression likewise increased from 9.3:1 to 9.5:1. To maximize the advantage gained by those increases, Porsche also replaced Bosch’s mechanical K-Jetronic injection and mechanically controlled electronic ignition with Bosch’s Digital Motor Electronics (DME) Motronic electronic fuel injection, an integrated system that regulated both fuel injection and ignition systems with synchronized electronic controls. Contemporary performance testing demonstrated the effectiveness of these revisions, which resulted in a .7-second improvement in 0-60 MPH acceleration and an 8 MPH increase in quarter-mile testing.
Not surprisingly, the 911’s already highly capable chassis handled the increased power with ease while taking advantage of new, larger disc brakes. Finished in sharp Ruby Red Metallic paint with a matching Burgundy leather interior, this 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe exemplifies the Carrera formula of the period. Its air-cooled 3.2L flat-6 and 5-speed manual transmission provide the power and sounds that are integral to the Porsche driving experience.
