Porsche capitalized on the inherent strength of the Type 997 introduced in 2005 by fielding an armada of homologation specials for competition on the international stage. At the core of this customer-oriented program was the 911 GT3 powered by the marvelous 3.6L dry sump flat-6 engine tuned to 415 HP at 7,600 RPM with a lofty rev limit of 8,400 RPM.
Introduced to American Porsche dealers for the 2007 model year, the GT3 RS (standing for the German “Rennsport” or racing) was a homologation special in the classic mold, fitted with the bodywork and mechanical specifications necessary to qualify it as the foundation for the full race RSR version slated for competition in both the European and American Le Mans racing series. Porsche conducted a serious weight reduction program in preparing the RS for homologation. The doors were aluminum and the front deck lid made of carbon fiber, the rear window made of Plexiglas. Air conditioning was deleted along with some leather interior trim and sound insulation.
But unlike their European counterparts, American-spec versions had power seats instead of lightweight carbon fiber units. A large carbon composite rear wing and bold body side graphics straight out of the early Seventies clearly identified the GT3 RS, which also featured Turbo-style wide rear bodywork to allow fitment of the extra-wide racing rubber used by the RSR. Two-piece forged alloy rear suspension links enabled camber adjustment, and the same lightweight material was used up front, while higher spring rates accompanied the firmer damping dialed into the Porsche Active Suspension Management system.
Looking like an escapee from the Mulsanne Straight, this 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 RS is the ultimate road-going 911 of the Type 997 era. Finished in Porsche Special Orange with Black OEM wheels carrying Michelin sport Cup tires and equipped with 4-wheel Porsche Carbon Ceramic Brakes, it has travelled just 17,444 miles and is a fabulous candidate for the serious Porschephile’s collection of dual-purpose road/track 911s. – Contrary to the printed catalog description, this 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 has traveled a mere 17,387 miles.
