Emerging in 1948 from a converted sawmill in Gmünd, Austria, the first Porsche Type 356 – a mid-engine roadster numbered 356/2 – established an industrial and racing dynasty and soon created an everlasting sensation among sporting drivers worldwide. By 1950, much-improved versions were being built in Zuffenhausen, Germany, and sales soon began to grow in the crucial and robust American sports-car marketplace, thanks in no small part to the tireless efforts of the renowned New York City-based European car importer, Max Hoffman. This matching-numbers, “bent-windshield” Pre-A 356 Coupe from 1955 exemplifies Porsche’s early 356-Series production models.
In addition to retaining its factory body numbers stamped in their correct locations, it features a 1488cc/55 HP Type 546-2 air-cooled, horizontally opposed OHV 4-cylinder engine, equipped with twin Solex 32 PBI carburetors and mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox. According to the accompanying Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this historic “Pre-A” 356 Coupe is finished in its factory-specified color combination of Silver Metallic with blue upholstery. Following importation to California, this highly desirable 1955 Porsche Pre-A Coupe was restored from 2002 to 2003 by Mark Miletich.
Desirable features include the original tube-type Telefunken radio and the Golde manual sunroof that was fitted in Germany during the car’s early years. Interestingly, the factory-chalked number “26,” corresponding to the final two digits of the car’s chassis number, 54126, remains on the underside of the dash. This historic 1955 Porsche 356 Pre-A Coupe is equipped with a correct set of 15-inch wheels and tires and includes the aforementioned Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, partial ownership records, service records and photo-documentation of its restoration.
An important early Porsche road car, this Pre-A 356 Coupe is highly sought-after and collectible, ideal for the true Porsche enthusiast.
