Hailing from the early days of Porsche 356 production, chassis 10971 left the factory on 25 October 1951 bound for Karlsruhe-based dealership, Gramling. According to its accompanying Kardex, the car was built in the desirable shade of Adria Blue and fitted with fog lamps, a Hirschmann antennae, and three-tone horn.
It is thought the car was raced in Greece, where it is rumoured to have suffered water damage in 1952. It was later exported to the United States, where it was campaigned before being taken off the road in 1973. In 2010, the Porsche was registered to a new owner in Nevada and was displayed at the 2011 Porsche Race Car Classic at The Quail Lodge, then finished in dark red with a modified dashboard and one-piece windscreen.
In 2017 the Porsche was acquired by the Drôme-based consigning owner, who returned the 356 closer to its factory specification. The car was repainted in Pascha Red—a correct colour for the model year—while the windscreen was replaced with a correct split window. The dashboard was repaired, and the interior was refinished. The previous restoration’s 356 B “crash” gearbox was retained, though the later Super 90 engine was replaced by a correct type “506”-series unit built to 1,500-cc specification.
This highly desirable “Model 51” has been refinished to a high standard and would make a fine addition to any collection of post-war European sportscars.
Ce châssis 10971, issu des débuts de production de la Porsche 956, est sorti d'usine le 25 octobre 1951 pour être livré à Gramling, le concessionnaire de Karlsruhe. D'après son Kardex, cette voiture était d'une séduisante couleur bleu Adria et elle était équipée d'antibrouillards, d'une antenne Hirschmann et d'un avertisseur à trois tons.
On pense qu'elle a couru en Grèce, où elle aurait été endommagée en 1952 par une inondation. Puis elle est partie aux Etats-Unis, où elle a connu quelques engagements avant d'être retirée de la circulation en 1973. En 2010, elle a été immatriculée dans le Nevada par un nouveau propriétaire qui l'a exposée lors de la Porsche Race Car Classic de 2011, au Quail Lodge ; elle était alors rouge foncé et arborait un tableau de bord modifié et un parebrise monopièce.
Cette Porsche 356 fut acquise en 2017 par son actuel propriétaire. Celui-ci, domicilié dans la Drôme, la fit remettre dans un état proche de celui de sa sortie d'usine. Il la fit repeindre en rouge Pascha, une teinte conforme à son année-modèle, fit remplacer son pare-brise par la version fractionnée d'origine, fit réparer le tableau de bord et fit remettre en état l'intérieur. Il conserva la boîte de vitesses 356 B à crabots de la restauration initiale, mais fit remplacer le moteur Super 90, plus récent, par un type 506 conforme, en version 1 500 cm3.
Ce très séduisant modèle 1951 a été restauré avec un haut degré d'exigence ; il constituerait un remarquable apport à toute collection de voitures de sport européennes de l'après-guerre.
