The Pontiac GTO would start a revolution in marketing street performance, but truth be told, those beginnings in 1964 were not overly technical. This tribute to that model’s opening model year with additional mechanical benefits began by procuring a similar 1964 LeMans convertible. Onto this, the equipment one might have desired on a GTO has been either installed or enhanced. The end result is nothing less than gorgeous. From the outside, everything looks standard. Originally built in the fourth week of May on the Pontiac, Michigan, assembly line, this car began with a nut-and-bolt rebuild for conversion.
Lift the hood and one sees period-like Tri-Power carburetion on a stock-looking Pontiac big-block V-8. However, this is actually a 455 CI engine rated at 370 HP. Behind that now resides a Tremec T5 5-speed transmission, giving its driver an overdrive gear for enjoyment and sending power back to a 10-bolt rear axle. The engine wears steel headers and a Vintage Air compressor, while power front disc brakes, power steering, a 4-link rear suspension and stabilizer sway bars make up the underpinnings. The chassis and engine compartment are both show-level detailed as well.
The renewed sheet metal is refinished in original code W Nocturne Blue Metallic, with a new power convertible top and new body trim and bumpers added. Inside, the bucket seat interior has been redone in matching blue vinyl, featuring a center console with shifter, full instrumentation including tachometer within the dash, a custom radio sound system, three-spoke sport wheel and turned-metal trim facings. Yes, there are even GTO body emblems, and a covered spare resides in the trunk. The one visible upgrade would be a set of new U.S. Mags Rambler chrome multispoke wheels and fresh BF Goodrich radial tires in 235/50R17 size.
For those wanting a real GTO that simply looks pretty, this may not be the one. For those who instead would like to relive the past with some great adaptions, the LeMans here could start a personal revolution.
