In the June 2006 issue of Motor Trend, the "Target Z06" cover story highlighted the track test of five of America's hottest tuner vehicles from Accufab, Hennessey, Lingenfelter, Livernois and Motorsport Technologies Inc. against America's best factory supercar at the time: Chevrolet’s 505 HP Z06 Corvette. The vehicle offered here is the 2004 Pontiac GTO run at the test at Lemoore Naval Air Station. MTI reportedly invested some $42,000 in modifications. The heart of the beast is a GM 455 CI LS2 monster utilizing ARP main and head studs, a 4030 forged steel crankshaft, billet connecting rods and forged, Teflon-coated pistons.
A set of Air Flow Research LS1 cylinder heads were ported and hand finished, and a FAST composite intake with custom Squires 90mm throttle body was added. Upping the power of the already stout mill is a STS rear-mounted turbocharger, which incorporates an intercooler and cockpit adjustable boost controller. Spent gasses flow through a custom set of long-tube headers, with 3-inch cats. On the dyno, the package delivered 900 HP and 896 lb-ft of torque. Getting all that muscle to the tarmac is no easy chore, so the MTI team added a Viper-spec T56 6-speed manual gearbox with a heavy-duty clutch and driveshaft safety loop.
The subframe connectors were boxed, and an adjustable 3-link trailing arm kit was added. Larger roll bars and heavy-duty struts and shocks were added, along with 3.73:1 gears. Terminal velocities are quelled by a Baer Racing Extreme Plus brake system, which includes 6-piston calipers, 15-inch cross drilled and slotted rotors, and heavy-duty brake pads. The GTO rides on a set of CCW 5-spoke wheels wrapped in Pirelli rubber. Inside, the car retains its factory air conditioning, power windows and door locks, plus adds black and blue Corbeau CR1 microsuede seats and five-point seatbelts and a Blaupunkt stereo.
