Starting in 1962, Pontiac began offering a full-sized, performance coupe, called the Grand Prix, that featured pillarless styling and a broad selection of small- and big-block V-8 engine options. The Grand Prix would prove very popular with the regular buying public, evolving through eight generations of vehicles from 1962 to 2008. Perhaps not surprisingly, a very special group of Pontiac enthusiasts, NASCAR stock car drivers, also became enamored with the Grand Prix, with such legendary names as Richard Petty, Tony Stewart and Rusty Wallace notching up victories behind the wheel.
During the mid-1980s, Pontiac began experimenting with aerodynamic changes that could give the Grand Prix an edge in NASCAR competition. But in order to use these aerodynamic demon tweaks on track, Pontiac had to offer to the public a limited number of street legal examples incorporating the changes. Thus was born the 1986 Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2, which featured an aero nose and a fastback-style bubble rear glass that smoothly transitioned into a fiberglass rear decklid with an integrated and extended spoiler. In all, only 1,118 examples of the homologated Grand Prix 2+2 were built and sold in 1986.
The example on offer is believed to be a prototype concept car for the 1986 Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2, bearing GM experimental VIN EX4788, and it has been featured in “Car Craft” magazine in July 2011. Finished in burgundy with red accents over a tan interior, this Grand Prix features a 5.0L V-8 engine married to an automatic transmission and has a full interior including bucket seats, center console, wood-grain interior accents, three-spoke steering wheel, black dial gauges and AM/FM/Cassette stereo.
