One of just 676 4-speed-equipped Grand Prix coupes built in 1969, this 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix Model J was delivered to Zone 20, Dealer 64, Haley Pontiac-Cadillac in Ponca City, Oklahoma. It features a rare combination of Palladium Silver paint with a blue bucket seat interior. Power comes from a V-8 engine, which is mated to a 4-speed manual transmission and Saf-T-Track rear end. Other features include power steering and power brakes with front discs, a console with Hurst floor shifter, dual exhaust and air conditioning, as well as Rally II wheels with BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. Recent service included a tune-up, battery, brakes, a radiator flush and carburetor adjustment.
The 1969 model year proved to be a pivotal one for the Grand Prix and completely redefined what a personal luxury car was all about. First introduced in 1962 to compete with Ford’s Thunderbird, the Grand Prix was originally based on the full-size Catalina platform. Over the years, it became larger, and the emphasis was shifting away from performance. The new-generation 1969 Grand Prix was based on an extended-wheelbase A-body chassis and took the long hood, short deck proportions to new levels, instantly turning the Grand Prix into something that was truly unique in the marketplace.
The public responded, and 112,486 Grand Prix models were sold in 1969, an increase of more than 350 percent from the year before. Once again, Pontiac batted it out of the park. With its status among those mere 676 optioned with a 4-speed in 1969, this 1969 Grand Prix is a great opportunity to obtain a truly history-making machine with PHS documentation to prove its rarity.
