The pony car war was in full swing in 1967, and every division of the Big Three wanted a piece of the action. Originally seen as a "consolation prize" for Pontiac (GM forced John DeLorean to drop plans to bring the two-place Banshee concept car to market, as it was seen as a direct competitor to the Corvette), the Firebird shared the F-body platform with Chevrolet’s Camaro but received significantly unique styling cues, thanks to Chief Designer Jack Humbert, who was assisted by Ron Hill.
The Firebird's bumpers were integrated into the design of the front end, giving it a more streamlined look than the Camaro, and its rear "slit" tail lights were inspired by the 1966–67 Pontiac GTO and more pronounced “Coke Bottle” rear styling. No less than five variants of the Firebird were available that first year: the 230/165 HP OHV inline-6 with an overhead cam; the Sprint with a 215 HP inline-6; the 326/250 HP V-8 with a 2-barrel; the HO, a high-output version of the 326 CI V-8 that was good for 285 HP through the use of a 4-barrel carb and dual exhausts; and the all-mighty 400, a 400/325 HP monster that added $358.09 to the bottom line.
Within its first year, Pontiac pumped out 82,560 Firebirds, with 15,528 being drop tops. This beautifully restored 1967 Pontiac Firebird Convertible is finished in gold with black HO side stripes, depicting its HO status. Power from an original matching-numbers 326 CI V-8 engine, which produced 285 HP from the factory. The engine has been upgraded with an Edelbrock intake and 4-barrel carburetor, plus chromed valve covers and an Edelbrock air filter assembly. The mill is matched with its original 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, powering the 15-inch PMD wheels wrapped in redline tires.
Dropping the black soft top reveals the optional Medium Red custom bucket-seat interior with pushbutton AM radio, passenger grab bar, cabin heater and full rear bench seat, perfect for cruising down the open road. As a period Firebird advertisement proclaimed, “After this, you’ll never go back to driving whatever you’re driving.”
