“Japan’s Corvette killer”: that’s what the automotive press called the 1990 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo when it was released late that year. Not that the normally aspirated 300ZX was a real slouch, but force feeding 9.8 pounds of boost from a deuce of intercooled Garrett AiResearch turbos into the 3.0L V-6 was like pumping Godzilla full of steroids. Rated at 300 HP and 283 lb-ft of twist, the 300ZX TT carried 80 more horsepower than an Acura NSX and 50 over a comparably priced Corvette. Nissan had come out swinging for the bleachers.
Brand new for 1990, the 300ZX was a far departure from its ZX brethren– lean, low and new sophistication, the design was more akin to something to come out of Pininfarina than Nissan’s inhouse styling department. Finished in Aztec Red with T-Tops and Charcoal leather seating surfaces, this unrestored 300ZX Twin Turbo has 83,000 miles on the clock, and still carries its 181 CI V-6 under the hood. Spec’d with the optional 4-speed automatic transmission, the engine was detuned to 280 HP, yet still could dash to 60 MPH in 5.9 seconds. Coupled with a viscous limited slip differential, power flows to the ground via factory 16-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels, wrapped in Definity VX700 tires.
The charcoal, driver-centric cockpit is set off by a contiguous center stack and full-length console, housing the shifter for the autobox, Bose sound system, power mirror controls. Analog gauges are, again, standard fare, now framed by a fatter, grippier steering wheel. Loaded to the gills with automatic climate control, power windows, locks and seats, this 1990 300ZX Twin Turbo is a great addition to anyone’s Nissan collection.
