For 1979, Nissan took the Datsun 280Z upscale and rebranded it as the 280ZX. Known internally as the S130, the new Z featured a wholly revised body while retaining the familiar look of the original 1970-78 S30 Z. Heavier and larger, the 280ZX gave buyers a more luxurious and technologically inclined experience, turning the Z into much more of a grand-touring vehicle than a sports car—ironic, considering Datsun shied away from calling the original 240Z a full sports car, preferring instead to call it a personal sporting GT car. To enthusiasts, the ZX really made the 240, 260 and 280Zs look like outright sports cars.
But, it was the right move for the brand and set the tone for the upcoming Z31 300ZX. To spice things up a bit and further the premium image of the 280ZX, in 1981, a turbocharger was made available. This increased torque and horsepower immensely, all the while also enhancing the overall image of the Z car. Now it was a car that could compete more squarely with cars like Chevrolet’s Corvette and even Porsche’s 911SC. For all intents and purposes, the 280ZX Turbo initiated the whole idea of a mass-market, Japanese luxury sports GT.
But, in typical fashion, while the new ZX Turbo was competitive to those high-end models, the price was still considerably less, making it a seriously attractive option. This 1983 280ZX Turbo hails from the final year of production, a year that would also mark the last of the inline 6-cylinder Zs with the new-for-1984 300ZX bringing in a new V-6. Finished in black with gold accents and trim, the two-seater car features T-tops, Turbo alloy wheels with gold detailing, twin sideview mirrors, specialized “TURBO” emblems and a rear windshield wiper-washer.
The tan interior features the digital instrument cluster, air conditioning with automatic temperature control, an AM/FM/cassette stereo system, cruise control and power windows. The odometer shows 32,357 miles, the turbocharged fuel-injected 2.8L L28 inline 6-cylinder engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, and the car is equipped with power steering and power 4-wheel disc brakes.
