One of the many cars Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) used in “The Fast and the Furious” was a Mitsubishi Eclipse painted bright green and laden with decals and graphics. Proving his salt to a crew of racing enthusiasts, the Eclipse performed well in the film, except for the manifold warning light and the floorboard falling out during a crucial race. Craig Lieberman, technical advisor for the movie, explained that while most car fanatics would know both dramatic moments were relatively unknown problems, they created the heart-racing suspense the film wanted to depict for the general audience.
Initially, O'Conner is shown practicing his high-performance driving skills in the Eclipse on the open parking lot of Dodger Stadium high in the hills above Downtown Los Angeles and having a slightly difficult time keeping things steady. Exciting and setting the tone, the car sounds fantastic and moves like a modified Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) car should, inspiring a whole generation and more to seek out and modify cars like this. Interestingly, production called for six Eclipses to be used in the filming of the movie, each having their own specific duties behind the scenes and in front of the camera.
This is Buck Car No. 35 and is complete with documentation from Cinema Vehicle Services verifying that this car was used in the filming of the movie. Powered by a 2.0L DOHC 16-valve inline 4-cylinder engine and an automatic transmission, the Eclipse features a simulated roof scoop, Sparco seats, a Jensen CD stereo system, various carbon-fiber-look appointments inside and out, an APR Performance rear wing and 7-spoke aluminum wheels with Toyo Proxes tires, along with various other modifications that give the car the look of an absolute asphalt terror.
Like so many of these modern Hot Rods, the Eclipse is laden with details that often escape casual observers, like the custom sideview mirrors, the racing sport wheel which deletes the factory airbag unit and, of course, the infamous diamond-plate floor pans.
