New though the 1250cc MG TC Midget was in 1945, it was in essence an evolution of a sporting line whose DNA sequence was first laid down in the late 1920s. Yet despite—and perhaps because of—its quaint “vintage” character, the first MG to be officially imported stateside found droves of fans among American sporting motorists, providing fun aplenty on the road and an affordable entry point to the world of motorsport.
In this realm, the nimble, light, small-engined MGs had already earned a deserved reputation for punching above their weight, one notable example being the supercharged K3, which in 1933 took a class win in the Mille Miglia and victory in the RAC Ulster Tourist Trophy in the hands of the legendary Nuvolari at an astonishing average speed of 78.65 MPH. In 1934, the K3 capped even that with a remarkable fourth overall in the Le Mans 24 Hours. Around 10,000 TCs were built, but only 33 of which were the immortal K3, to which this very extensively restored and uprated 1948 TC pays homage as a replica of the supercharged 1933 Mille Miglia K3.
On the one hand, it turns the clock back with its handcrafted, all-aluminum, boattail-design body evoking the even rarer MG Q-type racer (just nine built), along with a myriad of details including refurbished Lucas L165 headlamps with stone guards by Vintage Headlight Restorations, Alfin hydraulic drum brakes, aero screens, twin fuel fillers, K3 Magnette-style racing bucket seats and a Bluemel’s Brooklands four-spoke sprung steering wheel. Meanwhile, upgrades including a 5-speed transmission, radial tires and modern steering kit represent discrete but significant enhancements to the driving experience.
Fundamental to the K3 experience is the supercharger, which in this case provides a bridge from past to present. The Mirage Garage supercharger—aptly named with MG initials—was developed specifically for MG T-types with 21st century technology but with period external appearance by MG enthusiast and supercharger engineer Terry Peddicord, who noted that it was “inspired by the vintage predecessors but uses modern technology to achieve a better result.” With standard kits offering in the region of a 45% boost to rear-wheel horse power, higher boost racing superchargers can produce 150 HP with associated engine modifications.
Thus this interesting K3 Mille Miglia replica with a lengthy list of features and upgrades pays homage to the past while also embracing technological developments of the modern age.
