After the lean post-war years of the late 1940s, Detroit entered the 1950s re-energized and full of new ideas. A 1947 corporate reorganization positioned Ford’s Lincoln-Mercury Division to compete against General Motors’ more upscale offerings, specifically with the new Monterey, whose standard features included leather-faced seats, wool carpets, chrome-plated interior adornments, fender skirts, dual outside rearview mirrors, full wheel covers and a Gold-winged hood ornament. The Monterey benefited from Ford’s across-the-board redesign for 1952 with the addition of sedan and convertible models.
The early '50s Mercury Monterey has long been celebrated for its excellent engineering, rock-solid construction, quality fit and finish and excellent styling. The 1952 Mercury Monterey offered here incorporates an interesting combination of both period- and modern-era modifications, most notably its custom-built 276 CI flathead V-8 engine. Its internal modifications include an overbore, Mercury crank, an Iskenderian Max 1 cam with adjustable lifters and stainless-steel valves.
An Offenhauser aluminum intake, dual Stromberg 97 carburetors and finned Edelbrock aluminum heads were typical early 1950s modifications accompanied by a modern March Performance Ford flathead serpentine system conversion. A Ford automatic transmission with overdrive, 3.50:1 8-inch Traction-Lok rear end and power steering complete the mechanical features. The Monterey’s clean, tasteful two-tone Green and White interior, one of the nicest designs of the period, features a power-operated Black Haartz soft top, aftermarket air conditioning, a Grant banjo-style steering wheel on a tilt column and an AM/FM cassette stereo by Custom Sound.
The builder judged that the Monterey’s exterior styling needed nothing, and most would agree. Its pastel Yellow paint, True Spoke chromed wire wheels and wide Whitewall tires are early '50s all the way.
