For 1963, Mercury cultivated an entirely more modern, youthful, performance-oriented image in step with the market and influenced by parent company Ford’s massive “Total Performance” campaign. Building from the prior year with the full-size Monterey line, Mercury provided four levels, including the base Monterey, Monterey Custom, S-55 and Colony Park.
Stylistically, the big Mercury line benefited from Lincoln design influences, including the "Breezeway" retractable rear window, vestigial tailfins and rear treatment. The Monterey was long and, with exception to the slightly smaller station wagon, outsized the 1963 Lincoln with a wheelbase of 120 inches and an overall length of 215 inches. Virtually limitless options provided the ability to personalize their new Mercury as never before.
Performance fans were not left out, with the mid-1963 debut of the Marauder fastback model based on the top-level S-55 line, with its more aerodynamic roofline tailored specifically for the rigors of NASCAR competition. In typical Ford Motor Company fashion, several high-performance V-8 engines were available, ranging from the 390 V-8 in either 300- or 330-bhp tune to the 385 bhp 406 V-8 and all the way up to the thundering 427, in 410- and 425-bhp, dual four-barrel form.
Offered from the estate of John O’Quinn, this S-55 Marauder features the ultimate “dual-quad” 427 V-8 thumping out 425 bhp, backed by a four-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip rear end assembly. A 1989 AACA Senior National First Prize winner, the Marauder’s bright red exterior finish is complemented by smart white upholstery and abundant bright trim. As one of Ford Motor Company’s first NASCAR “Aero Warriors,” this S-55 Marauder is a highly desirable example, complete with legendary 427 V-8 power.
