As the Can-Am series progressed and the cars gained more power and top speed, Bruce McLaren’s team continued to develop the fundamentally strong M8 series of racers. The M8E reached its ultimate development with aerodynamic fencing and an integrated rear spoiler to take full advantage of the ever-more-powerful Chevrolet aluminum powerplants. Originally campaigned by Roy Woods racing in 1971, the M8E offered here was driven by Vic Elford, who crashed the car during practice at Laguna Seca. Fully restored by Benton Bryan using an original monocoque tub and equipped with a Lucas-injected all-aluminum Keith Black big block Chevy engine, it was extensively campaigned in vintage racing during the 1980s by both Vic Elford and Benton Bryan.
