When “The Fast and the Furious” was released in 2001, the expectations were markedly low, but Universal Pictures was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. While the 2001 film featured a red Mazda RX7 driven by Dominic Toretto (played by Vin Diesel), “2 Fast 2 Furious” featured an RX7 finished in House of Kolor Ultra Orange Pearl driven by Orange Julius (Amaury Nolasco). Four RX7s were used in the production but saw little screen time overall. Craig Lieberman helped the production select the cars for the franchise and discusses how Eddie Paul modified Orange Julius’ RX7 to distance it not only from the red car driven by Toretto, but other cars in the film.
To say it was difficult is an understatement, but with unique yellow Modern Image digital graphics over the orange paint, a Versas body kit, a J-Spec fiberglass hood, RO_JA R2-5 wheels, a Greddy muffler and tip, and a revised interior, the RX7 took on a whole new personality. This RX7 holds the VIN ending in 9865, was the second unit stunt car and was used in both the 2001 film and the 2003 sequel. Power comes courtesy of the famous 13B 1.3L/255 HP twin-turbocharged rotary engine and 5-speed manual transmission, which was largely stock in the film, with sound effects digitally enhanced in studio with recordings of either a Toyota 6-cylinder or Honda 4-cylinder engine.
That said, this RX7 does have the flamethrower exhaust seen in the film. The red and black interior features Sparco racing seats, a custom steering wheel and auxiliary gauges. An estimated $40,000 in upkeep and maintenance has been bestowed over this movie star, including engine and transmission work, new wiring and tires. The sale will include the outfit worn by Orange Julius and paperwork documenting the VIN and use of this RX7 for the first two films of the franchise.
