The '80s excess made its appearance in every part of life: big hair, big shoulder pads and big cars were quintessential parts of the decade. Automakers competed to outdo each other with ostentatiously styled, fully loaded luxury cruisers, and none better represented the era than the Lincoln Town Car. A Ford name dating back to 1922, the Town Car became its own standalone model in 1981, superseding the Continental as their flagship full-size offering. In fact, it was the largest production car in North America for most of the 1980s. Sharp blade-like fenders, a square profile and an upright grille gave the car a regal air for its entire first-generation run.
The last of those first-generation cars rolled off the line in 1989. Satin Black paint on the grille blades and headlight trim, chrome bumpers and trim and a pinstripe finish on the brushed metal panel at the rear added tasteful touches to the exterior, set off by a landau roof with a formal frenched rear window. Dazzling in White, this particular Town Car boasts an all-Burgundy interior with leather upholstery, matching floor mats and year-specific woodgrain dash and trim. Air conditioning, a cassette stereo, power windows and power door locks offer the convenience that luxury buyers had come to expect.
Under that massive hood rests Ford’s proven 5.0L V-8, equipped with multi-port electronic fuel injection and coupled with an automatic overdrive transmission. With fewer than 7,000 miles on the odometer, however, this pristine Town Car may be worth preserving as a monument to the decadence that made the '80s memorable.
