Country singer Charlie Ryan penned the tune “Hot Rod Lincoln” about his Model A Ford equipped with a Lincoln flathead V-12, but the car here takes that statement to an ultimate end. Beginning with one of the true prewar classics of American automobile production, this iteration was built around a true 1940 Lincoln Continental Cabriolet, and the car has been upgraded with modern appointments throughout. At a retail price of $2,840, the Cabriolet was the most expensive of the new Lincoln-Zephyr line, and only a handful of Packards and Cadillac models were priced higher; as a result, only about 350 were constructed for the 1940 model season.
This car’s refreshment begins under the hood, where a fuel-injected 4.6L Ford V-8 engine resides, backed by an automatic transmission. This Lincoln rides on independent suspension at all four corners, with disc brakes, Air Ride and modern power steering and brakes all part of its recreation. The body wears a platinum paint scheme with gloss black upper paint and top boot. Inside is also a far cry from 1940, with modern Lincoln-themed custom paneling throughout. This includes front bucket seats, a digital dash layout, floor shift in a custom console, digital audio components and air conditioning.
The car’s exterior wears bumper guards, fender skirts, thin-line rocker trim, body-matched outside mirrors and a continental kit. The final touch is the set of custom billet aluminum wheels by Colorado Customs with wide whitewall radial tires. This car has been honored in the hobby with no less than 46 trophies, took winning honors in Boyd Coddington Pro Picks in 2006, 2007 and 2008, has a World of Wheels Best in Class award, and received a Builders Choice from Goodguys as well. The low production and premium desirability on all surviving 1940 Lincoln Continental Cabriolets will likely keep this as an exclusive vehicle in the world of Rodding.
Ryan crooned his V-12 coupe was gonna lead his dad to drinkin’, but it’s safe to say there’s numerous enthusiasts who will really want this Hot Rod Lincoln.
