Conceived by Edsel Ford for use while vacationing at his Palm Beach, Florida winter holiday estate, the Lincoln Continental was based on the Lincoln Zephyr and executed by designer E.T. “Bob” Gregorie, who sought to fulfill Edsel’s wish for a “thoroughly continental” automobile, including a feature that would become widely popular in the 1950s: an externally mounted spare tire that was referred to as a “Continental kit.” The result of Edsel’s vision and Gregorie’s design skills was a styling and engineering triumph that still pleases the senses today. Built in the second year of production on February 11, 1941, this elegant Continental Cabriolet is number 259 of a total of 400 produced.
The subject of a five-year restoration to factory specifications, this brilliantly finished and arduously detailed classic moves under the power of the marque’s turbine-smooth flathead V-12, here mated to the desirable Borg-Warner 3-speed transmission with overdrive. Now in addition to earning an AACA award, the car was a recipient of the Carl F. Benz Award at the 2011 Geneva Concours d’Elegance held in Geneva, IL.
