The Lincoln Continental was conceived by Edsel Ford not as a production car but as a personal expression, an objet d’art. Edsel gave no thought to making it adaptable to the mass market. Indeed, Edsel’s natural artistic talent and good taste were the only factors in the design of the Continental. While he could have influenced its engineering, he relied completely on convention for its mechanicals, the chief factor in finally making it suitable for production. This singular expression of one man’s design sensibilities gained instant and lasting adoration by the public in a way seldom seen before.
This 1948 Lincoln Continental is a stunning example that has been part of the collection of a CCCA Regional Board of Managers member since 2000, and it has had just two owners since 1989. It has been expertly cared for and carefully used, making only rare appearances at selected Pacific Northwest Region CCCA events, and it has never before been offered at public sale. The car is finished in handsome Grotto Blue with red leather trimmed interior and tan soft top, and it is equipped with the optional heater/defroster, fog lamps, chrome bands and White sidewall tires. Under the hood the 305 CI V-12 engine is rated by the factory at 130 HP and delivers near-silent, turbine-smooth performance.
Notably, 1948 Lincolns represent the final year any V-12 was offered by an American car company, and 1948 is the latest year any Continental is accepted as a CCCA Approved ‘Full Classic.’ Just 452 Continental Cabriolets were built in total for 1948.
