Previewed in 1939 to Edsel B. Ford’s friends while vacationing in Florida, the “Bob” Gregorie-designed Continental was a bold design statement that clearly demonstrated how seriously Ford Motor Company’s Lincoln Division was competing for what was left of the American luxury-car market. Equipped with a smooth and powerful V-12 engine that was destined to be the last such unit offered in an American car, the Continental clearly reflected Edsel Ford’s penchant for European-inspired lines, simplicity and restrained brightwork. Essentially updated 1942 models, the postwar Continental of 1946-48 featured slightly revised grille and headlamp treatments.
Nonetheless, its design was considered so exceptional that the Museum of Modern Art selected it as one of eight automotive “works of art” for a special display in 1951. As before, acquiring such a car required a sizeable pocketbook, exceptional taste and supposedly even the approval of its discerning dealers. With consistently limited production numbers and their many attributes, Continentals of the immediate postwar era are the latest to receive Full Classic status from the Classic Car Club of America (CCCA), and they continue to be highly sought-after by today’s collectors and enthusiasts for their commanding presence and low production numbers.
One of just 738 cabriolets produced for 1947, this example retains its original drivetrain including Lincoln’s 305 CI V-12 engine featuring hydraulic valve lifters and downdraft carburetor, mated to a 3-speed manual transmission. Other mechanical features include a leaf-spring suspension and hydraulic drum brakes all around. Finished in maroon with a maroon and tan interior, the Continental features power window lifts, a manual folding top and original gauges, and it retains the original seats, carpet and wheels. Fog lamps, period-style whitewall tires, a spotlight and a rear “Continental” spare-tire kit are other highlights.
Avidly sought-after by society’s elite when new, the Continental re-established Lincoln’s exclusive image during the immediate prewar and postwar years, and it remains a watershed of 20th century automotive design today.
