444 hp, 5,167 cc four-valve DOHC V-12 engine with six Weber carburetors, five-speed manual transmission, independent front and rear suspension with coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers, and four-wheel hydraulic ventilated disc brakes. Wheelbase: 118 in.
In 1981, the only vehicle that could be found at the intersection of the exotic supercar and the off-road vehicle was Lamborghini’s LM002. It was as brutish as it was luxurious, and it found use with a variety of customers, ranging from militaries to Sheiks, as it could be stripped out for professional use or specified with all the luxuries that Lamborghini’s usual customers were accustomed to. The LM002 was graced with four-wheel drive, seating for four, and more than enough room for luggage, resulting in a vehicle that could go anywhere and one that makes no compromises.
Aside from the obvious addition of rear seats, the LM002’s interior is instantly familiar to anyone who has spent time in a Countach. Wood and leather is abundant, and even though the V-12 sits in front of the driver rather than behind, the exhaust note is still unmistakable, as its engine was sourced from none other than the Countach. Feeding that thirsty V-12 engine was a massive 76-gallon fuel tank, which helped accommodate its 8-mpg fuel consumption. Its performance was extraordinary, as it could complete a 0–60 mph run in just 7.7 seconds, which was incredible considering the LM002’s curb weight was 5,720 pounds!
This LM002, which was built in March 1989, has had only two prior caretakers, and it has spent its entire life in the Pacific Northwest with its second owner, Robert F Meyer of Hoquiam, Washington, who owned the car for the past 23 years. The odometer shows 18,000 miles, all of which are believed to be original, and it is still fitted with its original Pirelli Scorpion tires, which were custom made by Pirelli specifically for the LM002. With the exception of its wood trim, which was recently replaced due to its age, this LM002 has been very well preserved and remains in largely original condition.
It would make for a compelling driver in any locale, be it the sand dunes of Qatar or the urban jungle of New York City. This car, finished in classic red with a black interior, is certain to attract attention anywhere in the world.
The LM002 is perhaps the most outlandish vehicle created by a company that is known for creating cars that defy rationality, and it is undoubtedly an important part of Lamborghini history. The LM002 was destined to become a future classic the moment the final car left the production line, and an excellent example should be part of any significant collection of Lamborghinis. This example will certainly not disappoint.
