Jaguar dominated the international racing world for much of the 1950s with five overall victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans alone, with its C- and D-Type sports racers all powered by Jaguar’s revolutionary XK DOHC 6-cylinder powerplant. Succeeding the renowned XK120, XK140 and XK150 road models, the stunning E-Type debuted in 1961, and its early racing success with star drivers Roy Salvadori and Graham Hill against archrivals Aston Martin and Ferrari encouraged Jaguar’s eventual return to competition with the development of the radical Lightweight and Low-Drag competition E-Types.
While highly effective on the track, the E-Type remains best-known as a fast and gorgeous, race-derived grand touring machine. The longer-wheelbase 2+2 coupe arrived by 1966 and added rear seats and useful cargo space, all the while maintaining the E-Type’s sleek styling. Restored as a Series I-inspired Racing Replica with the Low Drag/Lightweight-style extended nose, this 1968 Jaguar E-Type Series II 2+2 features a long list of very well-conceived and executed performance upgrades evoking the early and legendary E-Type racing cars.
Power is delivered by a DOHC 4.2L inline 6-cylinder engine with rebuilt internals, here mounting three Weber 45 DCOE side-draft carburetors modified for fuel injection. Supporting features include digital fuel-injection control, a ported cylinder head, MSD/Mallory ignition, an aluminum radiator and a 2.5-inch stainless exhaust system with side and rear exits. A rebuilt 4-speed manual transmission delivers the power. Performance underpinnings include QA1 coilovers at all four corners, a Jaguar XJS rear crossmember, sway bars and urethane bushings, and the stopping power of Jaguar XJS disc brakes with a BMW ABS system.
The Jaguar’s sporting interior features red leather trim, carpeting and harnesses, a leather-wrapped Fittipaldi steering wheel and Smiths instruments, including a 160 MPH speedometer and 6,000 RPM tachometer. Safety is enhanced with an SCCA-spec roll cage built into the rear of the car and painted body color. Goodyear Eagle tires and 15×5 front and 15×8 rear chrome wire wheels provide road contact. Evoking the performance and looks of the iconic early E-Type racing cars that upheld Jaguar’s honor and took the fight to Aston Martin and Ferrari, this 1968 Jaguar Series II 2+2 is ready to enjoy and appreciate.
