When the Jaguar E-Type, or XKE, debuted in 1961 it truly rocked the automotive world. Many claimed it was one of the most beautiful cars ever produced, and the performance that rounded out the beautiful package was stratospheric, especially for the price. The original 3.8-Liter DOHC inline-6 cylinder engine would give way to the smoother 4.2L DOHC inline-6 in 1964; 1966 would usher in the new 2+2 Fixed Head Coupe featuring a higher roofline and an additional 9 inches to the wheelbase. Inside, a small backseat qualified the car as a true four-seater, and the extra length provided space for a new optional 3-speed Borg Warner automatic transmission.
Through 1967 and 1968 more changes would take place with the E-Type altering its appearance and performance characteristics, and by 1969 the Series 2 E-Type would debut. The 4.2L was still pulling the car around, but safety garb and emissions systems sapped performance just enough to lessen its luster as a performance leader. Instead of fighting reality, Jaguar focused largely on building the ultimate luxury GT, and it worked well. Owners of the early E-Types had matured enough that they were interested in more creature comforts, and the Series 2 delivered. Offered here is a 1969 XKE 2+2 Fixed Head Coupe originally sold at Monte Shelton Jaguar in Portland, Oregon.
Until earlier this year, the car had only one owner, the president of the Jaguar Owner’s Club of Oregon. It’s the recipient of multiple Best of Show wins and comes in unrestored original condition complete with original title, registration, sales receipt and books, and service and repair receipts. The 4.2L inline-6 is linked to a 4-speed manual transmission, and the Michelin Redline tires host the factory chrome wire wheels. This XKE presents well with a sweet patina inside and out.
