Reporting on the debut of the new Jaguar XKE at the March 1961 Geneva Salon, Autosport magazine’s correspondent announced, “The E-Type Jaguar has made its electrifying appearance, and at one stride Britain takes the lead in the Grand Touring market of Europe.” The next month, the XKE followed its Geneva triumph by stealing the show in New York. Ever since, the XKE, alternatively known as the E-Type, earned universal praise from critics and enthusiasts for its design excellence, race-bred performance and sensuous body lines. The XKE also stands as one of a small handful of automobiles on permanent display at New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
Based upon a competition-style rigid steel monocoque body shell, Jaguar’s brilliant E-Type, known as the XKE in America, was clearly descended from the glorious D-Type sports racers that ruled Le Mans for three consecutive years (1955, 1956 and 1957) during the 1950s. Lineage includes XKE-101 (the E1A development “mule”) and the promising E2A sports racer campaigned at Le Mans in 1960. A functional and sporting interior and powerful DOHC 6-cylinder XK engine inherited directly from the outgoing XK150S made the XKE an ideal and capable two-seat GT car.
Delivering breathtaking performance, the XKE gained immediate and lasting fame as the world’s first series-production sports car to exceed 150 MPH. Production began with cars destined for Jaguar’s crucial export markets in March 1961, followed by domestic production in July. Methodical updates soon included an engine-displacement increase to 4.2L and numerous running changes, making the later-production Series I cars, epitomized by this example, particularly desirable and enjoyable today. Continuing to benefit from a restoration, this 1966 Jaguar E-Type Series I Roadster is of course powered by a 4.2L inline 6-cylinder engine paired with a 4-speed manual transmission.
Resplendent in its silver paint finish with black upholstery, this E-Type’s desirable features include bucket seats, a tinted windscreen, Smiths instrumentation, a three-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel, an updated Audiovox AM/FM/cassette radio, twin center-exit exhaust tips and 4-wheel disc brakes residing behind knock-off wire wheels.
