The GMC Syclone is already one incredible truck, but as a promotional giveaway, Marlboro Racing produced 10 specially equipped Syclone Targas. This unrestored truck is one of the Marlboro Edition Syclones and has had two caretakers since new, the first being the original promotion winner. This machine has covered a mere 426 miles since new. Powering this hot little truck is a turbocharged 4.3L V-6 engine that produces 280 HP with 350 lb-ft of torque mated to an automatic transmission with all-wheel-drive to help harness that power.
In creating this unique vehicle, Marlboro lowered the truck 3 inches, added PPG Hot Lick Red paint with white graphics, a hard bed cover, Simpson 5-point harnesses and black Boyd Coddington wheels with Marlboro-logo center caps. The ultimate addition was the ASC targa-top conversion, opening up the roof of the pickup with removable panels. A custom storage rack for the top is in the bed. Equipped with power steering, power brakes, power windows, power locks, a Sony CD stereo system and Recaro seats, this rare piece has been kept in a Rhino Shelter protective cover to keep the elements at bay.
To be sold with documents of the promotion and contest verification included, the Marlboro Edition Syclone takes a rare truck to a whole new level of rarity. The Syclone had more in common with high-end sports cars than other pickups considering the turbocharged all-wheel-drive platform. No slouch on the drag strip, 0-60 MPH could be done in 4 seconds and the quarter mile was finished in around 13 seconds. In a fun comparison test, “Car and Driver” magazine pitted the Syclone against a Ferrari 348ts and the GMC more than held up its honor.
Only two runs of special-edition Syclones were produced, three Indianapolis 500 support vehicles and the 10 Marlboro versions, of which this is one example. It would be nearly impossible to find a rarer high-performance truck.
