GMC was in on the action when Chevrolet restyled its fleet of pickups for the 1955 model year. Like the Chevrolet Cameo trucks, GMC’s Suburban lineup offered customers a level of comfort, convenience and upscale style formerly reserved for car buyers. In fact GMC took the new concept even further than Chevrolet, employing more powerful engines, specifically GMC’s own inline-6 engine and Pontiac’s high-performance V-8. The Suburban differed in appearance from the Cameo mostly in its front-end treatment, Where the Chevy had an inset grille insert and a separate bumper, the Suburban wore a heavier two-bar moustache affair with twin bumper bullets, almost suggesting a Cadillac influence.
Flow-through front fenders, hooded headlights and wraparound windshields were shared by both badges. Another upside for today’s collectors: the Suburban was not quite as popular as the Cameo, making it rarer today. Perhaps the rarest “Task Force”-era Suburbans today are carryall models such as this 1956 Deluxe model, which features a unique “clamshell” rear tailgate. Restored to peak as-original form by N&S Classics of Mesa, Arizona, this Deluxe Suburban is from the dry and friendly climes of Yuma.
This is the Suburban at its most elegant, with stunning two-tone Turquoise and Ivory, it boasts an immaculate interior with factory basket-weave upholstery, Daytona-weave carpeting and a passenger car-style instrument panel with full gauges. New chrome and bright trim, new wide Whitewalls mounted on painted steel wheels with stainless hub caps and trim rings add further elegance to this showpiece. Power comes from the top-of-the-line Pontiac-based 316/180 HP V-8 (complete with new exhaust) mated to a heavy-duty Hydra-Matic 4-speed transmission.
