Much like the computer revolution of the 1970s and beyond, when new technologies bloomed and legions of tycoons were minted, the emerging automobile industry of the early 20th century gave rise to many innovations and innovators. Enter the Franklin motorcar, developed by engineer John Wilkinson in Syracuse, New York. Manufactured and sold under industrialist H. H. Franklin, the marque quickly gained renown as one of the most innovative motorcars of its time, featuring air-cooled engines and lightweight construction principles throughout production, making Franklins robust and reliable, ideal for the growing number of owners/drivers during the era.
Rough early roads were tamed by Franklins, which utilized full-elliptic springs and delivered exceptionally low tire wear, as well as minimal wear and tear to occupants. Numerous attractive and well-appointed models and body styles were offered throughout production, which began with the first Franklin sold in 1902 and ended in 1934, along with many other luxury marques that failed during the painful and lengthy Great Depression of the 1930s.
