From its birth in 1902, the Franklin Automobile Company was known for its innovative and distinctly unusual air-cooled engines. Although early Franklins were immediately identified by their varied front end designs, by 1925, they rightly decided that a conventional-looking faux radiator would improve sales. This Full CCCA Classic 1929 Franklin Model 135 Victoria Brougham is a fine example of that styling improvement. The 1929 Franklin Model 135 is built on a 125-inch wheelbase steel chassis supported by unique full-elliptic parallel leaf springs and tubular axles both front and rear. The Franklin chassis includes 4-wheel hydraulic drum brakes and a worm and sector steering gear.
The engine powering this Franklin is a 274 CI inline 6-cylinder valve-in-head design producing 60 HP at 2,500 RPM, and it features a fully pressurized lubrication system. That engine is backed here by a 3-speed manual transmission with a floor shifter. The chassis is supported by 19-inch, natural-finish, demountable, wood-spoke wheels and 6.50-19 white sidewall tires. The refinished wood spokes are numbered originals. The two-door Victoria Brougham body is finished in cream with a black upper body and fenders, and it includes a rear-mounted black trunk and a black fabric-covered spare tire and demountable wheel.
A chrome-plated, double-bar bumper protects the front while dual-bar, chrome-plated bumperettes follow up at the rear. A distinctive triple lens tail and stop light unit is mounted at the left rear. Meanwhile, the unique Franklin faux radiator with three narrow vertical bars and a Franklin badge brings an attractive appearance to the front of the car, and a distinctive pewter mascot located in Europe during the restoration is mounted at the top center of that faux radiator shell. The interior is finished in correct, wide-pleated, gray Mohair and features individual folding-back front seats and pleated pockets on the doors.
A rare, optional, extendable cigarette lighter is mounted in each seat back. The instrument board is finished in dark wood grain with three separate bright-trimmed panels in its center. The steering wheel also features a dark wood-grain finish. The extensive nut-and-bolt rotisserie $140,000 restoration was researched and completed by Memoryville USA and Autos of Yesteryear in Rolla, Missouri, and all receipts are included. This Franklin is a rare attention-grabber that will certainly be welcome at any CCCA or Franklin meet, tour or event.
