Inspired by the Boss 302 Mustang Trans-Am race car and the man who drove it to the 1970 season championship, this 2007 Ford Saleen Mustang Parenelli Jones limited edition is number 40 of only 500 produced. The collaborative effort of two American motorsports legends brings first-generation Mustang competition style and fifth-generation 21st-century performance technology. Jones is among the winningest American racers of all time, taking the checkered flags at everything from the Indy 500 to the Baja 1000. Builder and former racer Steve Saleen partnered with Jones and infused the fifth-generation Mustang with a first-generation Trans-Am racing core.
The Trans-Am tribute is powered by a 5.0L V-8 engine rated at 400 HP and 390 lb-ft of torque. The former 4.6L packs forged aluminum pistons and forged steel connecting rods and ported 3-valve aluminum cylinder heads with performance springs and camshafts. Saleen Powerflash calibration and a Saleen Design shaker hood intake with a high flow inlet tube and performance air filter feed the fire and 2.5-inch dual exhaust with dual stainless steel exhaust tips belts out pitch-perfect sound. The engine is backed by a 5-speed manual transmission and an 8.8-inch differential with 3.73:1 gears puts the power to the pavement.
Grabber Orange paint and period-correct black stripe racing livery join a special edition collection of aerodynamic and styling elements, including an injection-molded TPO front air dam and quarter panel, rear window sports slats and a ’70s replica rear deck wing. Hood pins, chrome trim and a billet aluminum fuel filler door add a finishing touch. Bolstered black leather seats with orange trim and stitching carry the heritage colors into the cockpit, equipped with a vintage-styled instrument cluster with tachometer and close-ratio shifter.
The limited edition tribute to American motorsports waits for its next driver to take the wheel, engage full power and push the Saleen Racecraft suspension and Minilite-style alloy wheels and tires to the limit.
