Since Carroll Shelby first coined the title in 1966, the name Super Snake has been reserved for only the most exclusive and powerful automobiles to carry the Shelby badge. First it was “the Cobra to end all Cobras,” the notorious twin-supercharged 427 beast, of which only two were built and only one—Shelby’s personal ride—survives today; then came the 1967 successor, a GT500 famously equipped with a full-race GT40 Mark II-spec 427 monster to test Goodyear’s new all-purpose Thunderbolt passenger car tire. With the re-introduction of the Shelby GT in 2007 came fresh demand for a new generation Super Snake, which Shelby was only too happy to meet.
Designed as a complete performance makeover to Shelby customer cars, the next-generation Super Snake conversion comprised a Ford Racing supercharger upgrade and an array of handling, braking and styling enhancements to produce what Shelby described as “a vehicle that could blow the doors off of most anything on the planet.” That description perfectly suits this faithfully preserved, 114-mile 2012 Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake Coupe from the outstanding Destin Car Collection.
Celebrating Shelby American’s 50th anniversary, the Super Snake is distinguished by an exclusive black and gold color pairing that recalls the historic Shelby/Hertz collaboration, along with special “GT500 Super Snake” and “Shelby 50th Anniversary” badging. A bulging fiberglass hood with dual scoops and hold-down pins, a front splitter and rear spoiler, dual exhaust and Pirelli tires on 10-spoke black alloy wheels combine for a typically aggressive presentation. The Super Snake’s racy appearance is backed up by formidable performance, produced by a combination of a Kenne Bell supercharged 5.4L V-8, 6-speed manual transmission, suspension upgrades and Shelby/Baer disc brakes.
The black leather interior furthers the Super Snake theme with more badging, contrasting gold stitching, well-bolstered bucket seats with embroidered Shelby American 50 Years logos and the full complement of power and entertainment accessories, all contributing to a car that pays full honor to the Super Snake heritage.
