As the lucky 13th model launched in just one decade by Ford’s SVT Special Vehicle Team, the 2003 Mustang SVT Cobra debuted with power delivered by the first-ever factory-supercharged V-8 engine in a Mustang. The Mustang SVT Cobra also marked a new performance high with 390 HP and 390 lb-ft of torque on tap. Far more than the sum of its parts, the high-revving, DOHC 4.6L SVT Cobra mill’s many upgrades included a high-strength iron block, Eaton supercharger, forged steel crankshaft and forged connecting rods and pistons. The flywheel was swapped to an aluminum unit for reduced weight and inertia, with SVT claiming it alone shaved 0.2 seconds off both the 0-60 MPH and quarter-mile times.
Only a 6-speed manual transmission was available for the new Cobra, delivering the power via a beefed-up clutch, U-joints and half-shafts, an aluminum driveshaft and a 3.55:1 final drive ratio. According to published road tests and statements by Ford SVT engineers, the Cobra delivered fabulous performance, including 0-60 MPH acceleration under 5.0 seconds, a 13.4-second quarter-mile and electronically limited 155 MPH top end. Stopping was delivered by Brembo disc brakes all around, comprising 13-inch front and 11.7-inch rear discs (both vented). Independent rear suspension raised Mustang handling to new levels.
Finished in black with a Dark Charcoal leather interior, this 2003 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Convertible is a one-owner example retaining its original paint. Collectability is enhanced by the 10th Anniversary Edition package featuring red brake calipers, Colorado Red seat inserts and interior accents, and commemorative badging on the decklid. Of course featuring the supercharged 4.6L DOHC V-8 engine and 6-speed manual transmission, the Cobra also includes a Borla exhaust system and cold air intake. In addition to its special 4-wheel disc brakes, SVT handling suspension, SVT independent rear suspension and Traction-Lok rear axle, features, options and amenities are plentiful.
Among them are articulated sport seats with six-way power adjustment for the driver’s seat, the premium Mach sound system, air conditioning, speed control, SVT instrumentation and a tilt steering column. Other choice equipment includes remote keyless entry, power windows and locks, tinted glass, interval wipers and dual power mirrors. Rolling on 17×9-inch split seven-spoke argent wheels.
