Presented in highly original condition, this 1968 Ford Galaxie 500 Fastback is finished in Candyapple Red and rolls on white lettering BF Goodrich T/A Radials with Magnum 500 wheels. Powered by the matching-numbers Y-code 390 CI V-8 engine and an automatic transmission, the car also boasts power steering and air conditioning, which add to the overall level of comfort provided by the plush muscle car. The red interior is fitted with a bench seat, a Philco AM radio and a clock, among other amenities. Complete with a Deluxe Marti Report, the Galaxie fastback first debuted for the 1967 model year and carried over for 1968 as the XL Fastback or the Galaxie 500 Fastback.
In keeping with the space race of the 1950s and ’60s, Ford showcased a concept car called La Galaxie in 1958. An otherwise mishmash of angles and shapes and surfaces, it lent a number of design nuances to later production cars, including the 1963 Chrysler Turbine. Late in 1959, Ford would take the already topline Fairlane 500 to another level with extra brightwork and special fabrics and create the Galaxie Fairlane 500, although Ford marketing only referred to it as the Galaxie. A mere $50 upcharge over the Fairlane 500, it was indeed a popular package and name.
In fact, the Galaxie name would last longer than Fairlane, which would be discontinued in 1970, while Galaxie stretched through the 1974 model year.
